Resident Lecturer in Tropical Rainforest Ecology

Position Summary: The purpose of this fulltime, year-round, residential position is to:

Teach critical environmental issues using a team-based, interdisciplinary, problem-solving approach. The specific area of course responsibility is rainforest ecology, which examines the structure and function of tropical rainforests, including the floral and faunal components, with particular emphasis on Australian rainforests;
Lead designated components of the Center's Five-Year Research Plan. Specific research lines/areas for which this position is responsible are: impacts of global climate change on forest ecology, rainforest fauna, impact of forest restoration on rainforest fauna, and impacts of fragmentation and forest corridors on ecological processes;
Oversee and advise individual student Directed Research projects that arise from this plan. Directed research projects for which this position has responsibility currently include: assessments of bird communities in Acacia re-growth, tooth-billed bowerbird habitat requirements, faunal recolonization within rainforest fragments and restoration plots, and impacts of cyclones on fauna communities.
Qualifications:


Ph.D. in: Ecology, Resource Management and/or Forestry.
Experience in experimental design and tropical rainforest field research experience in small mammal trapping and bird counts; seedling recruitment in restored rainforest plantings; monitoring and assessment of rainforest ecosystems.
Advanced knowledge of statistical packages with the capability to teach students in these areas.
Experience using GIS to address conservation issues.
University-level, interdisciplinary, team teaching experience in Ecology, Field Ecology, Landscape Ecology, or Tropical Forest Ecology.
Familiarity with: Landscape Ecology, Riparian Restoration, Mammalogy, Applied Biogeography, Natural Resource Management, and Tropical Conservation.
Good track record of research publications.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary teaching and research team.
Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues.
Willingness to work flexible hours and live on site at the field station with a small team of permanent staff, groups of U.S. undergraduate students and visiting researchers or programs.
Experience living and working in Queensland preferred.
Residential student group management and risk management experience desirable.
GIS (ArcGIS) experience desirable.
Preferred Start Date: August 15, 2008

Salary & Benefits Package: Salary ranges from $44,828 AUD to $50,000 AUD depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits.
